One of the Aluu 4 Victims, Lloyd Toku Mike is Laid to Rest in Port Harcourt

Although it’s been several weeks since the murder of four students of University of Port Harcourt by a mob in Aluu community, the sad memory of their death is still fresh in our minds.

Yesterday in Port Harcourt, one of the victims, Lloyd Toku Mike  was laid to rest in a ceremony laden with emotions.

The bereaved parents told journalists at the Township Stadium in the old Port Harcourt, that the only thing that could assuage them is that “justice should not only be done, but must be seen to be done”.

They commended the Police on the arrest of suspects in the killing of their son and his friends but added that more suspects are still at large. With deep, emotional words, they expressed how they felt since their son’s passing.

Toku’s father said he still feels the presence of his late son around the house. “I still remember him holding his mother by her shoulders assuring her that the future would be bright for the family by the time he finishes his University education and make inroads into his musical career. All that dreams have been brought to an abrupt end.”

Toku’s mother expressed what she called “inner joy that the evil labels of being thieves and cultists put around her son and his friends were cleared by the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammad Abubakar, who exonerated the innocent persons murdered when they went to recover debt from somebody who promised one of them accommodation, but wickedly raised alarm alleging they were thieves.”

We sympathize with the family and friends of Lloyd Toku Mike at this difficult time and we pray his soul will Rest In Peace.

JTF: Boko Haram Commander, Lieutenants Killed

Joint Task Force, JTF, in Maiduguri, Borno State capital, on Wednesday said it killed a Boko Haram Commander for the North-East and North-West of Maiduguri and his lieutenants, who allegedly killed General Mamman Shuwa three weeks ago.

The name of the Commander was given as Ibn Saleh Ibrahim.

In a statement by JTF spokesman, Lt.-Col. Sagir Musa, he said troops from the JTF, 333 Air Defence Regiment, the Department of State Security, SSS, with the support of a helicopter, conducted major offensive operations against some suspected terrorists in Nganaram, Bulabulin and Bayan Quarters in Maiduguri metropolis.

Sagir said the operation was still ongoing, but pointed out that the late Ibn Saleh was confirmed to be responsible for the recent killing of the Nigerian Civil War hero, Gen. Mamman Shuwa through the orders of the sect’s leader Abubakar Shekau.

A Chicago-area woman has been charged with killing her 5-year-old son and a 7-year-old girl as she babysat them, allegedly stabbing each dozens of times in a bedroom this week as they pleaded for their lives, authorities say.

Elzbieta Plackowska, 40, of Naperville, Illinois, allegedly told police she instructed her son Justin Plackowska and the girl, Olivia Dworakowski, to kneel and pray before she fatally stabbed them and two dogs at the girl’s home on Tuesday evening, Naperville police said.

Plackowska — charged Thursday with two counts of first-degree murder — allegedly gave investigators a number of reasons why she killed the children, the most recent of which was that she was upset with her husband and wanted to cause him pain, according to police.

“She began stabbing her son Justin and told him he was going to heaven tonight,” DuPage County prosecutor Bob Berlin told reporters Thursday, citing Plackowska’s alleged statements to police. “He pleaded for his life and told her to stop, but she continued stabbing him until he was dead.”

Plackowska was being held Thursday without opportunity for bail. If convicted, she would face a mandatory sentence of life in prison with no possibility of parole.

CNN’s attempts to reach lawyer Mike Mara, a DuPage County public defender representing Plackowska, weren’t immediately successful.

Police officers found the children’s bodies in Olivia’s home Tuesday night after Elzbieta Plackowska, covered in blood, arrived at a nearby friend’s house and claimed she had been robbed, police said.

The friend called police. Around the same time, Olivia’s mother called police to say she had come home from work and couldn’t enter the house because there was a strange lock on the door, and that she couldn’t find Plackowska or the children, Berlin said.

Officers forced entry into the home and “walked into a scene of unimaginable horror,” finding the bodies on the floor of the master bedroom, Berlin said.

Investigators said Plackowska offered several explanations, including that she believed an intruder killed the children, police said. Later, she told police that the children had evil inside them and she needed to drive the devil out, authorities said.

“She ultimately admitted that she had lied to the police in her earlier statements and stated she was angry with her husband,” Berlin said.

Plackowska told investigators that she told the children to get ready for bed, and the kids entered the master bedroom, Berlin said. Plackowska said she then went to the kitchen, took two knives, entered the bedroom and told the children to kneel on the floor and pray, according to Berlin.

She told police she stabbed Justin repeatedly, and then stabbed Olivia because Olivia saw her attacking Justin, according to Berlin. She said Olivia, like Justin, pleaded for her life, Berlin said.

Police said Justin was stabbed about 100 times, and Olivia about 50 times.

“She did not express any remorse,” Berlin said.

Naperville Police Chief Bob Marshall told reporters that the “senseless taking of the lives of these two children defies logic, and our community is grieving.”

In all my years of law enforcement, this is the most gruesome and horrific crime scene that I have seen,” Marshall said at the news conference.

Plackowska told police she was upset with her husband in part because he was gone most days, working as a truck driver, and that she felt he didn’t treat her as she deserved.

Plackowska is awaiting a November 21 arraignment.

News Update: 28-Year-Old Mother Smothered Her Baby To Death With Qur’an To Save Him From The Devil

A 28-year-old mother who smothered her baby to death with a copy of the Koran told police she was trying to save him from being possessed by the devil, a court has heard.

The five-month-old boy, who weighed just nine kilograms, was found with 39 wounds on his body at his home in Halmstad, Sweden, in July this year.

Most of his injuries were caused by being crushed and battered by the Muslim holy book, prosecutors said.

‘The woman intentionally killed her child. She smothered it to death and the Koran was the murder weapon,’ prosecutor Anders Johansson told the court.

The 28-year-old mother, who admits the charges, claimed she had suffered weeks of hallucinations and visions where devil’s horns were growing from her son’s head.

‘I saw horns growing out of the baby’s forehead and long vines on his body. I saw an old man’s head on his body. I wanted to save my baby, not kill him,’ she told the court.

Defence lawyer Goran Ruthberg added: ‘My client was in a psychotic state. She had no intention to kill and considering how she was feeling, she had no way of predicting what might happen.’

The woman’s husband, who cried as he listened to the prosecution’s description of the horrific attack, has forgiven her, according to Expressen.se.

‘She was a good mother and a good wife. It is a horrible thing, but it was an accident,’ he said.

The couple, who are Muslims, reportedly met on the internet and married after a week.

The father said his wife was overjoyed at the birth of their child but her mental health soon deteriorated.

A medical examination found that the mother killed her child under the influence of a serious mental disorder.

She cannot be sentenced to prison if she is convicted of murder, according to the newspaper. The case continues.

Bishop David Oyedepo, the Chancellor of Covenant University, has said that the university will kick off studies in law and medicine before the end of 2014. Oyedepo said this at a press briefing announcing the 10th year anniversary celebration of the university.

According to him; “Designs and details for constructing faculties of law and medicine are ongoing. By 2013, latest 2014, the faculty of law will kick off. A large portion of our property is being developed to build a world class teaching hospital that will enhance medical services.”

When the arrangements are finalized, he said, these will be at Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State and Landmark University, its sister university in Kwara State.

Oyedepo also used the opportunity to announce that Living Faith Church is set to begin two new universities: “As at 2006, we had seven universities in our 25-year plan; four in Nigeria, and three in other African countries. Construction for the third university in Nigeria, Crown University, will begin in January. Crown University will be based in Calabar and will focus on maritime studies.”

Arpan Saxena, 4, says he “can’t walk a lot” because his feet do not fit into conventional shoes.

The boy from Bhopal, India, was born with two genetic disorders: Polydactyly, which causes a person to have extra fingers or toes; and syndactyly, which means some fingers and/or toes are fused together.

Saxena has 13 fingers and and 12 toes. He was born with 14 fingers, but lost one in an accident when he was 2.

‘He was out playing when he injured one of his fingers, and it just sort of came off,’ his father, Anil Saxena, told the Daily Mail.

Though many people have offered to foot the bill for surgery, the boy’s parents say their son is just fine the way he is.

‘Arpan is famous all over Bhopal and we like it that way,” said his mother, Tanu Saxena. “I am apprehensive about how an operation might affect him at this age.”

Arpan is a local celebrity in his home city. The youngster says he enjoys the attention when people come to take pictures of him, though he notes that the lack of properly fitting shoes keeps him from walking much.

Arpan’s parents aren’t the only ones to see some benefits of polydactyly. Cuban man Yoandri ‘Twenty-Four’ Hernandez Garrido says his extra fingers and toes are a blessing. Not only do they allow him to expertly climb trees, he says, but he also makes a significant amount of money charging tourists to pose for pictures with him.
